VDOT looking for input on proposed Staffordboro lot adjustments BY SCOTT SHENK/THE FREE LANCE-STAR, Sunday, May 31, 2015

The Virginia Department of Transportation is proposing some changes to alleviate slug-line backups at the newly expanded Staffordboro commuter lot. The highway department says it would like to put up “destination” signs at the North Stafford lot for the Pentagon, Crystal City and Rosslyn slug lines, add a new pickup area for Rosslyn slugs and put in some crosswalks. The highway department wants to hear from commuters on the proposed changes. Commuters can send comments to kelly.hannon@vdot.virginia.gov. Put “Staffordboro comment” in the subject line. Comments will be taken through June 26.
VDOT decided on the proposals after watching how the pickup area worked and by using more than 60 commuter responses to a survey, according to Sean Nelson, VDOT’s local residency administrator.
Shortly after the new section of the Staffordboro lot opened in November, some commuters pointed out to VDOT officials that there were problems with the designated slug pickup area that clogged traffic in the lot and on Staffordboro Boulevard.
It appears that more commuters are using the ride-share method of slugging since the opening of the Interstate 95 express lanes in December. The slugging community is drawn to the express lanes because vehicles with at least three occupants can use them for free.
