Here is a good position paper on the dangers of a massive shift to public-private partnerships. It's just a few pages long, but really covers all the major issues that need much more consideration before we give away our entire infrastructure.

Interesting paper! Can corporate sponsorships be far away? Coming soon to a highway near you:
"The Nextel/Sprint Expressway, mile markers brought to you by Hooters, law enforcement provided by Brinks, and traffic signals sponsored by GE." Giving directions should be a laugh; "...drive straight down the Verizon Turnpike, take a left at Applebee's mile marker 12, on to New Ford Escape boulevard until you see the Intel sign for Micorsoft Way, then you will bear right at Marriott intersection..." The way companies are bought and sold these days, who knows who will end up "owning" our public roads! Imagine the potential for conflict if, for example, a private road owner decides to raise the tolls on a day there will be heavy traffic to a specific event (such as an event sponsored by a compeitor), or they decide to raise the tolls for another special event. Consider the conflict to public interest if a private road owner company happens to be a subisdiary to a military contractor and decides to raise the tolls on a day there is an anti-war rally in DC. |
