I get off at 5:30pm--closest train stration is Gallery Place-Chinatown. Where is the closest slug line? Someone please reply ASAP and also let me know of alternate ways to get back to Rt. 17.

You could take the yellow line to the Pentagon slug line and if you don't catch a ride, catch the martz bus from there back to Rt17 or you could even catch the martz bus in DC. From what has been posted here recently, it seems that there are no "active" DC slug lines to Rt17. Check link below for schedule/pickup locations/ticket prices.
