As you may have heard, there is a Town Hall meeting planned to discuss HOT lanes in Prince William County.
The Committee To Save HOV (SaveHOV.org) is co-hosting a Town Hall Meeting with Prince William County Supervisor Corey Stewart (Occoquan) to discuss HOT Lanes. When: Monday March 14th Time: 7:00 PM Where: Woodbridge Senior High School - Aditorium All interested parties are encouraged to attend. Invitations will be made to other elected officials. If you are interested in helping to distribute flyers announcing the meeting at commuter lots next week, please contact David Turner, Assistant to Corey Stewart, Occoquan District Supervisor and co-host of the Town Hall meeting. You can contact David @ allturners@comcast.net or 703-969-8411. A volunteer organization meeting will be held at the Occoquan District Supervisor's office at the Chinn Library near the corner of the PWC Parkway and Old Bridge Rd. on Wed 9 Mar 05, at 7pm. David A. You may want to change your topic heading. On a site dedicated to slugging and opposed to HOT, you won't get many volunteers to help save HOT.

Bob,
Thanks for the help. You are right. We need help...volunteers. The volunteers are meeting at the Occoquan Supervisor's office @ 7pm on Wed 9 Mar 05 to organize passing out flyers and otherwise getting the word out about the town hall meeting, which is next Mon. We need more help. If you can help, please come to the volunteer meeting tonight. Please contact David Turner @ 703-969-8411 for any questions. Thanks, David Turner Assistant Occoquan District Supervisor Prince William County BOCS |

I'm not surprised. The focus on hybrids masked the REAL problem - increase in population in the burbs combned with increase in job opportunities in DC which led to overall increase in total congestion. Although the HOV lanes have become worse, the regular commuter lanes have become even more crowded. The push to move hybrids off HOV has caused Transportation authorities as well as law makers to realize that the overall congestion problem needs a different solution. Reducing traffic in HOV by adding to commuter lanes is untenable for those who get elected by the masses - since there's a heck of a lot more masses in the regular commuter lanes, adding to their commute for a "minor" HOV slowdown is a surefire way to have a change in elected officials. HOT becomes the path of least pain.
Alternate solutions have to find a way to better balance the congestion between HOV and regular lanes. Hybrid exemption was a shot at that, but rabble rousing will likely kill that. With exemption expiring in 06, only solution on the board now is HOT. |

Nationwide, that is true. There are a heck of a lot more masses in the regular lanes. But that is not true on Shirley Hihgway. During congested hours, there are a lot more people on the reversible lanes. Problem is, commuters don't get to vote by the route used. They have to overcome the Darrel Issa's that introduce exemptions, and the Stan Paris's that change the rules. And the local Supervisors that play dog in the manger.
Slugs (the majority) are being disenfranchised and persecuted for their commuting beliefs by a minority (drive alones). Free the Shirley Highway. Pitchforks, torches, storm the castle, kill the monster. quote: dickboyd@aol.com |
