Hi,
I just started commuting from Reston to DC and would like to pick up slug(s). Anybody else interested in this? My time to arrive in DC is about 8:45 in NW DC.

I'm trying to slug to Rosslyn, but need to get in earlier. Try looking for slugs at the Herndon Park and Ride lot. Not sure how active the line is, but try posting a sign in your window when you drive up...

the herndon-monroe park and ride has hundreds of bus riders each morning. there are a number of slug riders holding signs waiting for a ride.
just go there, put up your sign and reel in the riders!

Reston to Washington DC.
I picked up a passenger (slug) for the first time this morning and it's great. My commute time just got better by 30 minutes. For 50 cents for the toll, it's definitely worth it. I'll be doing this regularly from now on. I'll be there Mon-Fri mornings around 7:30am.
I can drop a passenger off at the Foggy Bottom/GWU Metro stop in Washington DC.

Herndon/Monroe to Rosslyn (and a few other locations) is up and running.
Drivers and passengers should hold up signs to make it easy for everyone involved, and to also advertise to bus riders that the slug line is working.
Note- commuters on the toll road prior to the Herndon/Monroe exit can bear left (so as not to drive into the garage), pick up a slug and return to the toll road WITHOUT PAYING A TOLL. Most slugs wait across from the bus lane in the kiss/ride lane. Drivers coming off of the toll road in particular may need to hold up a sign, or park and walk over to the bus line to find a rider. Pull all the way into the small lot to pick up a rider, do not block traffic prior to the lot.
Slugs, keep an eye out for drivers in the small lot across from the bus lane. Dividing the line between the bus lane and that small lot is NOT a good idea.
As a slug, I've managed to get a ride as late as 8:30am, and have not heard of drivers having trouble finding a rider.
Both slugs and drivers should take care NOT to obstruct traffic.
Momentum is definitely increasing as of Oct 04 in the Herndon/Monroe lot. I've also seen drivers looking for passengers for Chinatown, Ballston, L'Enfant Plaza, and even Crystal City, all of whom managed to find a passenger as late as 8:30...

The Herndon Monroe slug line to Rosslyn and places beyond is still active. Drivers report an a maximum wait of 15 seconds to pick up one to 3 passengers. If you've thought about driving to work, you've got a huge pool of candidates waiting in line for the 950 and 980 buses.
Slugs- a ride in the morning is possible- I slug virtually every morning, BUT, there are only a few regular drivers.

I don't need to pick up slugs at the HM Park and Ride until about 8:20-8:30 to get to Rosslyn and have not had any trouble the couple times I have tried it, so I am sure earlier in the morning is even better. Even if slugs need to go all the way in to DC, the drive to Rosslyn avoids the cattle-call like transfer from bus to train at WFC metro. It's a little late but I've always had at least one person practically run to my car. I just wish there was one back in the evenings.

Good Night! This morning I had to wait 30 minutes to slug into Rosslyn from the H&M Park-and-Ride. [:(]
Hopefully it will pick up tomorrow and the rest of the week![:D]

What time did you get to the park 'n ride?

I get to the park-n-ride around 7:30 each day. And usually, there are at least one or two cars that pull up within 10-15 minutes and they are going to Rosslyn or are going to DC but are willing to drop off at Rosslyn. In 30 minutes, there was one woman going to Capitol Hill and the second car was the one that I got a ride with!

Alright - I give up! I waited again this morning for 30 minutes. I have the opportunity to become a driver starting next month and I am taking it. So there will be at least one more driver (for a total of about 5) for the Herndon/Monroe P&R. [8D]
Also, I am going to swing by the 5a bus stop and pick up folks for the ride home. [:D]

Merlin:
There have been several of us who have tried to start a slug line at the Herndon/Monroe P&R. My excuse for quitting is that I formed a carpool, which has worked well for me.
If you want to start a formal slug-line, there are some instructions floating around on how to do it. The hardest part is to find the other end for the trip home. Seems like there are a lot of Rosslyn commuters and a lot of DC commuters. The DC commuters seem to be spread over the city, from Independence Avenue, Farragut, Union Station/Capitol Hill, Foggy Bottom, etc. You have to figure out the most popular (or in your case, where you work). Pick a stop that's most convenient to you and then get out there and promote it.
Pick a start date, tell people about it, and continue to promote it until it catches on. I found that this site has a limited audience, so you have to be clever. Slug-lines are a bit of a chicken and egg conundrum. Be patient and persistent, and it will work.

Herndon-Monroe to Rosslyn is still active, although some drivers have had the nerve to get local jobs. If you'd prefer to drive to work, please print a sign and come pick us up.

I'm a driver who just today began picking up slugs at the Herndon/Monroe Park-and-Ride. I drive a black Honda Civic hatchback and will be getting there around 7:30 AM each day (when I'm not on business travel). I work downtown across from Federal Triangle.
See ya round!

I'm driving into Clarendon every morning around 8am and pick up slugs at Herndon Monroe. I used to drive to Rosslyn and had a good following, thanks to Steve, Maria, and Scott for making my commute faster and providing good company. A few slugs balk at the ride to Clarendon because it isn't as close to the city, but I have heard it is actually faster for slugs going into the city because we avoid the backup getting off exit 73 on that little stretch of Rt 29.
Today was the first time I had to wait awhile for a slug and there were plenty of people getting on the 980 bus looking over. If you regularly ride the bus do yourself a favor and save $1 and some time and jump in. There were lots of slug drivers this morning and not enough riders.

I've had various results in my past week of slugging (which I had never had the opportunity to do before now). I've had to wait as long as 30 minutes , and as short as 5min. I've had the same driver two times, and new drivers the rest of the time.
I hope to coordinate a perm. ride to and from, but I'm never opposed to slugging. I've met quite a few interesting people in this last week!

I too recently moved to Herndon and I am now working in Foggy Bottom. If you are going to be making the commute to and from DC, I would be interested in talking about pick up times and drop off's. Let me know.

On a whim this morning I went to see if I could pick up a slug from the Lowes Island Commuter Lot in Great Falls Plaza on Algonkian Parkway (bus stop for Loudoun County Transit). It worked. I see also that the bus now stops at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church. Herndon-Monroe has been good for me as a driver, but if I can keep picking up slugs on Algonkian Parkway, I will continue to do so. This way I can get right on the Toll Road without having to go to the H-M P&R first.
