I have picked up slugs for approximately 19 years and never have I been disrespected in such a way as I was tonight.

I picked a gentleman up at the Pentagon for Rt 610 Mine Road. He was not a big man in size. He had more than enough room in my Ford Explorer to accommodate him, his briefcare, and his rather large umbrella. I noticed upon getting settled in my vehicle that he moved the car seat but I thought nothing of it...UNTIL he got out of my car at the lot - - - he had unbuckled my daughter's CAR SEAT!!!

Is it just me or is this RUDE??!! A beach towel is placed on the car seat for anyone to place their items if needed.

WHAT IF ... IF I took my daughter to day care and God forbid I was in a wreck and did not know that her seat was not buckled.

Am I over reacting? I would love to meet up with him again and if I do see him waiting in line - I would inform him of his error!

He should have had the decency to first ask if it was ok, and then re-attached anything he un-did when he went to get out.

It was rude, and dangerous.

This is a shared system folks. Most of us were raised with manners, it's time to start using them.

You are not over reacting, he shouldn't have unbuckled the car seat.

This gets back to last weeks forum on Rules. Some slugs don't follow any guide lines at all.

You are right in being upset. It's not just rude, it could have been a bad situation if you hadn't noticed!

I don't think you are overreacting. He should have asked if it was OK to unbuckle it and should have offered to rebuckle it when you got to the destination.

Is it possible he couldn't find the buckle for his belt and thought the one to the car seat was for his seat? Sometimes the buckles get pushed down between the seat cushions and he might not have seen the one for his seat.

OK. So you assumed that he moved the seat but DID NOT HAVE to unbuckle it?

Maybe it was LAREADY UNBUCKLED?

Is it you or just rude? Well, I think your assumptions make you rude, or is that just me?

Are you over-reacting?

Yes! So, lets ask a few questions. Is tha car seat in the middle position of three across the back seat and is it uncomfortable to sit with the child seat in that position. Do you place it in the middle to make it convenient for you to attand to your child WHILE DRIVING?

If you see the gentleman again, will you just launch into him when you do not know that he actually did what you accuse him of? Or, will you ask if the seat is in the way and offer to move it? Or, will you move it aside to RESPECT your fellow passengers?

WOW!

SuzAnne you are wrong it is her car, she shouldn't have to move the car seat!

SuZanne - the seat is probably in the middle because that is the place in the car parents are told is safest for your child.

juleskitt -He should have asked and you are not over-reacting, but it might have been an accident. It is possible that the rider unbuckled by accident looking for his slot and the seat got shoved during settling and he didn't realize. People who are not parents and/or haven't been for a long time don't realize how IMPOSSIBLE those seats are to get in place properly.

I would love to see some lady just start yelling at a stranger in the morning. Better than a cup of joe if you ask me.

We were told by a Stafford County Sherriff doing the car seat safety inspection (totally free, at the Courthouse BTW, just call the Sherriff's office) that the safest place for a car seat is behind the passenger seat, or driver seat. But I am assuming it really depends on the size/style of your vehicle.

Did the slug unbuckle the seat belt or the safety latches? Seat belts dont do a dang thing for the restraint of a car seat.

Was the carseat an infant/toddler seat with safetly restraints, or a booster seat for an older child that uses the seatbelt? SlugMMike has a point.

Although, either way, the slug should have spoke up if he was uncomfortable and wanted to unlatch the seat.

Have been slugging for over 16 years, and am completely amazed that anyone would have the nerve to disconnect an infant car seat, or touch any of the driver's possessions for that matter. Isn't it just plain common courtesy to keep your hands off? From what I know, it was a rear facing child seat...one of the ones that are a total pain to put in. But does it really matter? This person just made the rest of us look bad, like we’re a bunch of spoiled brats who have no respect for anyone’s property and feel it’s our right to do what we want. Thank goodness the driver has been picking up slugs for 19 years and this wasn’t their first experience.

Did you yell at the guy yet? Count me in. I’m not much of a yeller, but don’t have a problem letting the guy know just how dangerous and disrespectful his actions were. I’m lucky it wasn’t me. I would have been in big trouble…picking my baby up and then to find his/her seat had been removed, I would have had to call someone to come and help me put the seat back in right.

To the ones here who think this guy had the right to unbuckle the car seat, I have no idea where you would even think that was a right of any “stranger” in a “stranger’s car”, and are probably just typing these types of crazy comments just to try to cause controversy on this site. You are not speaking for the majority. To the people reading and who do not post here, most slugs are polite, gracious and respectful. Don’t let one idiot turn you off to picking up the rest of us.

Well said Sluggie. We have an infant/toddler rear facing and a toddler front facing- they are both TERRIBLE to install.

To all new parents- please, have the Sherriff check your install. Our install was WRONG, and we had driven for a few weeks that way.

If you are uncomfortable with the car seat in the middle - don't get in the car. CASE CLOSED. The driver is doing YOU a favor by picking YOU up. I kept my child's seat in the middle because I was told that was safe. Also, I believe there are many studies that state this fact.

Also, have any of you ever tried to tend to a baby in a rear facing car seat. It's not as easy as it was portrayed in a previous post - Try it and let me know how it works for you.

Just as YOU are doing THE DRIVER a favor by enabling THE DRIVER to use the HOV lanes.

I agree that the presence of the car seat in the middle is just another factor that determines whether you should take a ride or not. If you have trouble getting in and out of a back seat or need extra head or leg room or extra width, just let somebody else take that ride and you can wait for a ride that is a better fit.

Maybe you should focus on driving than tending to the baby.

I don't think anyone in their right mind would rather their baby get fed or stop crying at the expense of dying in a car wreck.

you absolutely are not overreacting! i too have a car seat and i can not imagine someone doing that. good thing you noticed, what if something bad had happened? my question to the guy that done it - why??? what reason would you possible have for unbuckeling the car seat?

I will not even get in a car when the car is small and there is this huge absurd carseat in the back. One time I did unbuckle the seat belt and move it over. It's borderline an extra body in the back seat.

Hey if you're ever going to the Pentagon from 234 in the morning or back to 234 from the Pentagon in the evening and you see either a dark blue jeep or a teal Montego, please don't get in, I don't think either one of my cars can meet your exacting standards

This experience makes me think and realize that its best not to let anyone sit with the kid. The 3rd person can sit in the front passenger seat. One just cant trust anyone these days.

There was no child in the car seat at the time - it was empty of child. If there had been a child, the passenger would have been in the front seat.

I think this topic has been beat to death. Since we were not involved, and only have the drivers side of the story, we will never know what actually happened. Personally, I think it is smart for a parent to always check to the restraints and what-not that are part of the car seat before they start driving - it could have become loose for any # of reasons. And hey, if you have more than one child, they could have unbuckled it if they were bored or something (not really refering to this situation but to anybody).

I see, the car seat was in the middle. For picking up slugs, ewe shud have the car seat in one of the passenger seats, not the middle. Sure, I know he cud refewes the ride, but after committing to the ride he probably felt obligated and probably did not see the car seat when walking to the car. I have passed on two rides and both times they looked at me funny and said something. I basically said "hay, I ain't getting in." In one case it was a truck with one of those funky fold down seats and did not feel like doing that thing on that day, though I have done that plenty in slug rides.

From the tone of the thread, ewe thought the man got in the car and reached over and unbucked a car seat in the far side with a child in it and then slapped him.

Question:
Why was the female sheet (ewe) doing such awful things in a car?
And why so many references to things cows eat (cud, hay)?

I was wondering the same thing about the sheep references... [:D]

I really think they did not do it intentionally. Who would unbuckle a car seat??? You know when you can't find the correct buckle to put it in and you are feeling around. I am sure that's all that happened.

This was all wrapped up so nicely by lisad219.

I've seen several cars where the center seat belt receiving end was fastened right next to one of the passenger's. This was the case in our Accord and I can't tell you how many times we had folks hop into the back seat and fumble with the belt.

I'm more inclined to believe the guy unbuckled it by accident. That being said, he could have re-buckled it or at least said something.
