I need to declaw a cat. And yes, I am aware this makes me a demon. [:D] Nevertheless, I need your reccommendations.

There is a great animal doc on 610 behind the DMV, that is where I took my cat. I have been going there for years with my pets. I'd recommend only doing the front claws, and keeping the rear claws trimmed, this way if your cat ever gets outside/lost he/she can defend themselves against dogs/cats/other animals if need be.

Declawing is a personal choice, I have had and bread cats my entire life, have had many cats declawed. It is not inhumane if it means an animal will have a caring owner and a place to live.

To those against declaw- would you rather have the cat in a shelter on death row, or declawed and in a home being cared for?

Take into mind depending on the cats natural demeanor, their temperament may change after they are declawed.

I would also recommend if you have not yet had your cat spayed/neutered, and plan to, do the spay/neuter and declaw at the same time, as they will only need anesthesia one time.

Also, how is this any different from birds that are purchased in a pet store whose wings have been clipped? Or skunks de-stinkafied so crazy's can keep them as pets? Just my two cents.

Cheers, happy Friday!!

Clipping a bird's wings is like a haircut, there is no pain associated with it.

Descenting a skunk? Hello - you have to have a wildlife permit to keep one of those. I'm not even going to go there.

Declawing a cat is like cutting off each of your fingers below the first joint. Their nails grow out of a bone and if that bone is not removed, the nail regrows. Cats walk on their toes. You destroy their balance and redistribute their weight when you change the shape of their feet. Cats that are declawed tend to bite more readily than cats with claws. Cats that are declawed are more prone to inappropriate elimination than cats with claws.

What is wrong with providing something that the cat is allowed to scratch on?

It bothers me that people take this so lightly and think so little about mangling their pet for their convenience. Plenty of well behaved indoor cats have their claws and have good homes. The two are not mutually exclusive. If you are not willing to put in the effort and expense to provide a scratching post and work with a cat to get them to use it, get a stuffed animal or go to the shelter and pick up a declawed cat that someone else has turned in because they are tired of it peeing all over their house or biting them at the slightest hint of provocation. Jeez.

I declawed two cats and swore never to do it again! Because they remove their claws at the first knuckle, they walk funny. I now keep my other cat's claws trimmed and disciplined her from scratching on the couch. Hey, why not purchase a good cat tree that will allow them to scratch and exercise? For the price of the surgery you could get a nice one. Here's a great company -- http://www.angelicalcat.com/. My vet doesn't declaw on a routine basis anymore (only in extreme circumstances).

Unless there are cats in the HOV lanes, declawed or not, this posting doesn't belong on this board.

Elemental and GMHP - thanks! Good suggestions.

Oosik - I regularly take my cats in HOV with me. So there! [:o)] I said "off topic" in the header.

TJones - do you work for PETA?

Hey GMHP. :) Decided not to declaw - the behavior modifications we were using in the interim have worked out so well, there seems little need.

Plus, it makes me not feel so bad about eating spotted owl tacos for dinner every thursday night. [:o)]
