I think if 95 stays closed I will take the metro to Springfield, catch the bus and call it a day. Hopefully we'll know more closer to the 5:00 hour. What a mess. On another note, I'm not sure why flatutentslugger keeps posting. He has nothing objective to add to the board. I'm glad most people ignore him.

Koakui, Catching the metro to Springfield or VRE seem to be the only alternatives. For the uninitiated, PRTC has activated their Emergency Service Plan (ESP) so you pay to catch the metro but the bus ride from Springfield metro stop to the commuter lots of Horner, Potomac Mills (and others?) is free.

Well let's hope they force the traffic back to the normal lanes so us sluggers can get home without delay.

On WTOP traffic cameras it looks like it is open again now...if so, that is amazing.

I just heard from a friend that the accident has also affected Metro riders going to Springfield/Franconia. I believe the accident is on the main lines not HOV, from what I see on WTOP.

I'm looking for the WTOP website. I can't find anything. Please send me HTTP link. thanks

FYI HOV has been lifted on 395/95 for today.

Do you happen to know how it is affecting metro riders? Are there delays and such?

Posted By: fryed_1

redline has delays... That's all I heard.

Hopefully people won't forget to pick up slugs even with the HOV restrictions lifted :(

The Blue line to Franconia/Springfield will be packed since PRTC is not going any further North than that metro stop.

VDOT's site says that 3 lanes are closed and one lane is open on 95 South, either way it's a mess. I dunno how I'm getting home now.

Forget Horner Rd, use Potomac Mills!

Not completely sure but it maybe only affecting those who take the metro and transfer to a bus. Buses are having trouble finding alternate routes, I'll try and find out more.

They moved the camera. The north of 7100 cam was on the spill, but they moved it slightly forward so you can only see the traffic. 10 mins ago it was still closed down.

Drivers will still pick up slugs. That's cause the REAL slugging community does look out for each other to some extent.

Too bad some just don't get it. 2006 isn't too far off...

How about we all agree collectively (riders and sluggers) that we leave closer to 6pm. By then hopefully the traffic will be flowing nicely again and us sluggers won't be stranded :(

I sure hope nobody took the regular lanes.

It took about 10 minutes longer than usual in HOV. I actually think the hybrids outnumbered the other SOV's!

PanaRican,
Considering it took me $82.00 to fill up the pick-up Monday, no I don't pick up slugs if I don't have to.

You're welcome.

I can see one potential side effect of rising gas prices: more formalized carpools. Incidents like yesterday probably would have caused less angst in some slugs had they been in committed carpools. I used to carpool and used slugging as my backup. Wouldn't have missed my carpool yesterday for anything.

I saw many drivers picking people up, even though they didn't "have" to. In fact, my commute was exactly as it always is; had I not known about the problems I would not have noticed.

How sad that many drivers only look out for themselves, and not the good of the slugging community as a whole. I hope no one got stranded because drivers didn't "have" to pick riders up.

How pathetic! Maybe some of you poor oppressed full time slugs should think about tipping.

I am inclined to agree with 122582, the gesture of offering a tip to help on the gas would be appreciated.

That was a great contributions to slug (riders) yesterday. Even though HOV restrictions were lifted, drivers still came by the Pentagon to pick slugs up. Whoever picked me up, thank you for your time and effort.

Posted By: pplmvrs
Date Posted: 17 Aug 2005 at 12:25pm
My ride home was only about 10 minutes longer than normal and I did pick up slugs at the Pentagon. Three to be exact. I don't only look out for myself when restrictions are lifted!!

Posted By: carleric
Date Posted: 17 Aug 2005 at 12:56pm
122582, I am certainly not telling you that you SHOULD pick people up when you don't have to. Obviously. I am glad that there were enough selfless people out there to get us home. I am grateful every day for every ride I receive.
Why is that $82.00 you paid for gas relevant? It would have been that much slugs or no, right?
And we've covered the tipping issue ad nauseum on here. We're each getting something out of this - we EACH get to work quicker. That's why I personally don't tip (although I almost did yesterday to express my thanks to those who went out of their way to help others...).

Posted By: Geezehead
Date Posted: 17 Aug 2005 at 12:57pm
I almost took three but it was still early. My only comment to my riders was "I brought two of you in this morning so I am darn sure going to drag two of you out now".

Well I guess 122582 you should take the regular lanes in the morning. Let turn it around, you slugged in that morning. what would you have done. Would you be mad if drivers say 'The hell with a slugg I'm heading home solo' Come on now. You sitting on the corner and you don't get a ride. Treat others the same way you want to be treated.

FYI: I have a Avalanche and putting 50 + dollars is the normal for me. But you decide to drive your truck into work and you got there early that morning with little or no traffic. So don't b*tch about gas when you get to work 2 times faster than others in the normal lanes. If you feel like slugging is beneath you then jump in the normal lanes and get to work when you can.

Posted By: gtivr6ps
Date Posted: 18 Aug 2005 at 3:01pm
As I rounded the corner to my normal pick up area at Lenfant to Horner I told myself that if there is anyone standing out there and ready to jump in I would pick them up. And at 3:15, 2 people were already waiting. So in they came and the first question..."You guys know of a different way to get home?"

Posted By: 122582

Gee Avalanche, If I were a slug, I'd have quietly gotten on the bus or train and not whined that the guy who gave me a free ride home 4 days out of the week didn't do it 5.

Nobody owes you a ride home.

BTW, get a real truck when you grow up.

LOL... That's why it cost you $82.00 dollars to full yours up every 3 days. Stop complaining... Just admit you was wrong. But I"m sure you be there this afternoon picking up slugs just to beat the traffic. HOV hasn't been lifted today.

Question for you.

When do you ask for Gas money? Once you already on HOV or when they walk up to the truck ask you where you going? I"m sure you don't want to bring it up at the lot because it would be a long morning/afternoon for you.

BTW 82 dollars you must be driving a 18 wheeler. Take a step back and come down to affordable truck.

First of all 122852 or whatever your name is - the buses weren't running that day which is why people were trying to get rides. It left quite a few people wondering how to get home. Nice normal people picked up slugs and took them home. You, on the other hand, didn't. Stop being so unnecessarily mean to people on the board. If you don't want to pick up slugs, go drive your gas hog in the regular lanes. No one wants to ride with you anyways. You should change you handle to Driver w/ Attitude w/ Gas Guzzling Hog. Enuf said. Thank you!

Enuf,
If no one wants to ride with me, why do they constantly ask me to take 3, or 4, or 5??

I'd be nicer if slugs didn't whine so much.
