Officials discuss parkway site cleanup, construction

Virginia Department of Transportation officials on Wednesday said they
would consider awarding a contract that would allow construction to
begin on a two-mile stretch of the Fairfax County Parkway on
approximately 170 acres owned by the U.S. Army at Fort Belvoir before
the EPA has approved the environmental remediation performed by the Army
at the site.

That word came following a June 1 meeting on the issue in the
Springfield offices of Elaine McConnell, Springfield District
Supervisor, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. Mount Vernon District
Supervisor Gerry Hyland and Lee District Supervisor Dana Kauffman also
attended. Various Army, County and Fort Belvoir stakeholders also attended.

"My intent here is to show the extent of work the Army has performed to
date in preparing the parcel so construction can begin," said Col. T.W.
Williams, Fort Belvoir commander. "There’s been a lot of work done. We
hope that by sharing that with you, it will help [construction] get started."
