Newbie question - I have never done this slug thing before, but I am going to VA beach from Arlington this friday (7/12) right after work. From research I've found that the best place to pick up people who need to ride past the end of the HOV on 395/95 is Pentagon. Can anyone confirm or refute that? Also, which destination tends to be the easiest to find people? I guess if possible, since I'm going to the end of the line, I should go to a less frequented line, for the good of the community. Any advice about that?
I'm not exactly positive about how to get where I need to be, though. Should I go through Crystal City to get to Fern St? I don't know the Pentagon area very well, so any help is greatly appreciated. Also, my experience tells me that the HOV lanes on 395 do move pretty quickly compared to the regular lanes on Friday. I've been in the traffic twice and both times that was the case. Can anyone confirm that it is generally true? Accidents of course notwithstanding. Thanks! |

The easiest way would be to hit Fern Street, pass under the 95 overpass and when you get to the stop sign, look ahead and the Fredericksburg/Slug lines will be standing off to the right. To access the line make a right hand turn and then an immediate left into the parking lot and loop around to pick up. (There are signs posted) The Stafford 610 line drop off point is the closest to the interstate but you do have to sit through a light or two to get back out to I-95.
Good Luck. |

Just a note of warning -- were the HOV lanes connect back into I-95 can get backed-up on Fridays.

I had noticed that they get backed up. I also saw that the regular lines started going quickly at about the same point. I imagine that anyone I pick up would have experience with this and could offer advice about whether it was best to get off before the last exit, if possible. Either way it will save a ton of time if I do manage to do it! I'll have to leave work early to get to the Pentagon before 5, how crowded are the lines usually if you show up after 5?

I'm a "regular" to the 17 line who never gets there before 5:15. There are almost always plenty of riders waiting.
