I just wanted to share my experience yesterday. I was walking to my slug line in the afternoon and was about 10 paces from the line when I heard running behind me. As I neared the slug line with about 5 paces to go, the runner passed me and got into line just ahead of me - literally about 5 feet before I got there.
I thought, well, that's a bit of a sheesh, but no worries. There were only two people ahead of me now, so I would probably get the second car. A car pulls up wanting two slugs (the runner and the person in front of him) and turns out to be the teeniest, tiniest two-door car you ever saw. Right behind it pulls up an SUV needing one person. Would you believe it, the runner offers me the ride because he doesn't want to get into the back seat of the two-door. I had to laugh and told him that as he was obviously in a great hurry, I was happy to take the car behind and got into the comfy SUV. He did apologize, though. Was I very nasty??! I did feel quite smug!! I am sure there are no rules to running ahead of the person in front of you to get in line, but I did find it a little annoying. |

No, you weren't very nasty. If you were nasty you would have tripped the SOB, which is what I would have done and what I suggest you do next time.
Only kidding! |

Personally I would (and have) said something. But in this case, justice was served.

Recently, I had the same thing happen to me one afternoon on my way to the L'Enfant line. I was crossing the street and I hear running footsteps behind me. If he got any closer to me he would have been on top of me. Once he passed me just as we got across the street, he continually turned his head to check and make sure I wasn't going to pass him. I was so irritated but brushed it off because we ended up in the same car anyway.

I like that. SmugMug. I certainly felt smug for a while and it's been a great story to tell. I wouldn't have minded so much (after all, maybe he was in a hurry because he had an emergency or something at home) if it was just the overtaking bit, but the audacity of offering me the seat was just too funny, especially with the SUV pulling up just as he was saying it. You could see the emotions on his face, and then as he apologized, when he realized what a twit he was being. I would never have said anything if he hadn't offered me the seat. I love immediate consequences for great twittiness and, in this case, I was actually able to say the right thing to really cut him down and didn't hassle myself for days after wishing I could have come up with a better put down!! The timing was so perfect.

I'm glad you got the better of the runner. At first, I didn't quite understand what he apologized for, then your second post made it clear that he didn't realize that he was being twit. I like your way of saying "shove it" in a civil manner.
But, what if that person said "I need to pass on this tiny car" and immediately got into the SUV and left you with the choice of getting into the tiny car or waiting for something else? what would you have done in this situation? |

He'd already gone to the car and was in the process of opening the door to climb into the back when the other car pulled up. He offered me the ride (very sheepishly) and I refused saying my "you're in such a hurry" line and went straight to the other car. He could have just left the door open and bolted for the other car, but it was really just a case of timing. You can't avoid rude people, but in this case, it worked out really nicely.
