Gill to petition against HOT lanes
Potomac News Tuesday, July 31, 2007 A Republican candidate for the 51st House of Delegates seat is starting a petition against HOT lanes. Faisal Gill is collecting signatures at commuter parking lots in protest of the Virginia Department of Transportation's plans to convert HOV lanes into toll lanes. Carpool vehicles with three or more passengers would not have to pay the tolls -- single occupant vehicles would have to pay a variable toll that would have no cap. The tolls would rise as congestion on the HOV lanes build, according to VDOT officials. Gill said HOT lanes would destroy the region's network of carpooling and slugging. If elected, Gill said he would write a bill to stop HOT lanes from being built. -- Lillian Kafka |

I contacted my supervisor in PWC about this whole thing and got the following response today. The entire PWC BOCS is opposed to HOT lanes---unfortunately, other jurisdictions in NOVA are not. He recommends this:
"I would encourage you to write to the Governor and Secretary of Transportation, to let them know your opposition as well. At this point, the whole thing is really in their hands and there probably won't be many future opportunities for local governments to weigh in, so citizens need to keep the pressure on." This is disappointing. spidermonkey |
