In december my 2000 lexus es 300 was towed from the intersect of 18th street and u street in Washington DC. I received a voice message from an officer in D.C. stating that it was towed to young & towing in washington d.c for safe keeping.

I contacted the tow company over and over and was told that my car was not there. I contacted the police station to find out where my car was and was given the run around. Finally, on February 15, received a notice from Virginia DMV stating that a tow company called Black and White Towing in Dumfries, Virginia wanted a lien against my vehicle.

I immediately tried to contact the company but no one ever answered the phone and there was not way to leave a message. I contacted prince william police to see if this company existed. They told me that they were not aware of this company. Finally I went to the address listed and there was no one there. I left a note asking for response from them.

The owner called me 2 weeks again and said he wanted me to pay $5500 to get my car back. I informed him that I don't know how he gained ownership of my car. He refused to speak to me and hung up the phone. I tried to call back but he now refuse to answer his cell phone. Since the owner of black and white towing refuse to speak to me, I called the original company in washington, d.c. I informed the owner that the owner at black and white towing refused to speak to me. He then informed me that he sold my car to black and white towing for $400 on February 15, 2006. Do anyone know what the laws are regarding this. Are there any attorney that would take my case at a fee. Please email me mail1727@yahoo.com

Peace

It looks like you got roped and won't be getting your car back unless you shell out $5500 bux. I agree with RR, the first time you contacted the police and they gave you the Run Around, you should have hung up, called right back and said your car was stolen.

I wouldn't have thought of doing that. I know better now though, eh.

Sorry about your situation 1727. Have a couple lawyer acquaintances one of which might take the case. Contact me at the email link here.

Sort of related. If the car was moved in DC, be it stolen or towed for illegal parking, DC is responsible for the action. However, since the car did not have DC plates, I suspect that the follow up was less than exemplary. Record keeping may have fallen through the cracks.

Picture this. A resident of Virginia parks his/her car in DC. Somehow the car ends up in Maryland. Either towed to an impound lot or stolen and abandoned. Who is responsible for solving the crime if the vehicle was stolen and who is resposible for keeping track of the car if it is moved legally?

If stolen, the DC police are responsible for solving the crime. Does DC have an agreement with surrounding jurisdictions regarding reporting of abandoned vehicles?

A few years back, a favorite form of transportation from Alexandria to Prince Georges County when it was late and the buses had stopped running was to steal a car. The car would be abandoned in a shopping mall. Eventually the car would be towed to an impound lot. By this time the insurance companies had settled payment on the stolen car.

Bottom line? What degree of cooperation exists between the police departments in the several jurisdictions?

Think of it this way. You drive miles out of your way to save a nickle a gallon on gas. What are you willing to do to lower your insurance bill. Other than switch to Geico? (Lizard advertising is cheaper than actors.) How about decreasing the claims for automobile theft? What is the closure rate for car theft crimes in the various jurisdictions?

Anyone know a reporter looking for an investigative story?

From the Baltimore Sun
Cameras scan license plates for stolen cars

By Melissa Harris
Sun reporter

April 3, 2006

As her marked car crawled through the parking lot, Detective
Kelly Tibbs' new laptop beeped like a supermarket scanner. Two
cameras, positioned like crab eyes on the cruiser's roof,
snapped digital pictures of hundreds of license plates, and with
each beep, the laptop checked the images against an FBI list of
stolen cars....

OK I have been reading this website for a few years. The conclusion I have come to is that people need to relax a bit.

It was very obvious to me that Shelbybrynn WASN'T trying to boost his/her star count, rather she was TRYING to get all the relevant topics back on top of the topics list past all of the cellphone spam stuff.

Instead of criticizing, be thankful you don't have to scroll through pages of spam to get to the topics the website is trying to address.

Well, it obviously wasn't apparent to me or I wouldn't have commented. I don't have the time to check this site every day - just about once a week and I start at the date where I left off and work back. YES, I DID take the time to scroll through a weeks worth of postings to check the ones that I'm interested in. Not really that hard - I just check the dates.
