This is the Basic Question: Is it appropriate to use your stuff to secure your place in line while waiting nearby in your vehicle? To be more specific, the question posed is, is it appropriate to come to a slug line, leave a bag or some personal item on the ground to maintain your place/position in line, and then wait nearby seated inside a car.

Hi SlugAtHorner. I'm with elizabeth64 on this one. The rider loses their place in line.

Like everything else, I think it depends on the situation. If somebody has to run back to their car to grab their Blackberry or umbrella or something like that then I think it's OK for a short-term placeholder.
I might also consider honoring the use of a life-sized cardboard cutout to hold one's place in line. [:o)] |

Here's the deal. There are early arrivals to the the slug line arriving between 4:30am and 5:00am, knowing that the first car may not pickup until 5:30 or later. They park along the slug line placing bags or newpapers to hold their place in line. They are usually out of their car and standing in line by 5:25. This is not just the Rosslyn stop but at the Crystal City stop as well. The system has been working in both lines, until today when SlugAtHorner had a problem with it.

The DMV located on Caton Hill Road opens at 8am on Saturday mornings. On any given Saturday, one can expect a sizable queue in front of that building in the run up to 8am. If you were to arrive early, place a bag at the front door, and return to your vehicle to wait, I can only imagine the reaction you would encounter were you to return to it with a person or two present in hopes of reclaiming your position in the queue. It's safe to say you would likely receive some fairly passionate arguments against allowing your positional return.

Rossrider - read how slugging started. There is nothing about people placing objects on the ground to hold their place in line. It started with people standing in line waiting for rides. While there may be concern arriving very early at the lot before drivers arrive, remember the old saying - there is safety in numbers. Standing in line is a good and safe way for slugs to look out for each other.

Jody - Point taken. Three of the early arrivals are women. And they do not arrive at the same time. Have you ever been to the Rosslynn slug line at Horner Road, if so you will see how it is situated. The items are placed in line in front of their cars. If SlugAtHorner (who only just started slugging from this stop within the past week and takes the computer bus when it arrives) would like to wait in one of the ladies' car I'm quit sure that they would be more than happy to allow him to. Once again it has and does work.
