A flyer was distributed at the Bob's slug line in Springfield recently (thanks to Ann for sending this to me!) that announced a relocation of the line effective November 8th.
Please see the details on the flyer http://www.slug-lines.com/downloads/Bobs_Relocation.pdf Basically, the slug lines in front of the former Circuit City parking lot along Old Keene Mill Rd will be temporarily relocated to the rear (or south end) of the lot. |

Saw a near-rear-ender this morning as we passed "Bob's". [:(]
It was when a car stopped unexpectedly in the right lane of Old Keene Mill to pick up two slugs. Instead of going to the new temporary location, the slugs decided to form their own new slug line on the curb of OKM. The driver of the Honda behind the car that stopped unexpectedly locked down the Honda's brakes and swerved into the lane to his left to keep from rear-ending the guy. The right-hand lane is very busy and is used by the SOV drivers to enter I-395 North. Maybe the two slugs didn't get the word about the temporary move of the "Bob's" lines, or it was too much bother for them to go to the new temporary slug line location described in Admin's post. C'mon, man! Be safe! |

Cops will not hesitate to ticket drivers and riders who form up on OKM. They have done it before and will do it again and be very agressive about it.
Don't stop on OKM. |

When I've been walking on OKM to Circuit City, I've had drivers stop in the right lane and ask where I'm going. I just say Circuit City and keep walking.

New Park and Ride Construction Nearing Completion: “Bob’s Slug Line” Temporarily Moved, But Still Operational
Effective November 8, 2010, the slugging area for “Bob’s Slug Line” located in the former Circuit City front parking lot along Old Keene Mill Road will be temporarily relocated to the rear, or south end, of the lot. Drivers may enter the relocated slugging area from Springfield Boulevard, bear right and circle counterclockwise around the parking area to pick up sluggers, then exit back onto Springfield Boulevard. Drivers should not pick up slugs along Old Keene Mill Road. The front parking area will be re-paved and painted, and a bus shelter will be installed in the front of the lot. The front parking area is expected to re-open in 2 to 3 weeks with project completion on schedule for a December 2010 opening. For a diagram of the temporary slug line location, please visit www.fairfaxconnector.com. For information about this news item, call Ellen Kamilakis at 703-877-5606, TTY 711. |

The morning slug lines are actually across Old Keene Mill Rd from the location of the old Bob's Big Boy restaurant. |

Ribbon-cutting Ceremony Marks Completion of Old Keene Mill Park and Ride
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Monday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m., at the Old Keene Mill Park and Ride, 7039 Old Keene Mill Road, Springfield to celebrate the opening of Fairfax County’s newest park and ride lot. Effective Dec. 6, “Bob’s Slug Line” will return to operating from the north end of the lot, bordering Old Keene Mill Road. “We mark the completion of two key objectives for Springfield--facilitating and encouraging mass transit and turning a blighted eyesore into a community asset,” said Lee District Supervisor Jeffrey C. McKay. “ I am also pleased that the slug line that has successfully operated at this location for many years will continue.” The park and ride has 277 spaces; should future funding become available, the property may be redeveloped as a 1,000 +/- space commuter parking garage. One of the first slug lines ever documented, Bob’s Slug Line, operates from this location. Slugging is a unique and mutually beneficial form of commuting that consists of drivers — who need additional passengers in order to use the HOV lanes — picking up riders who need a ride to work. No money is exchanged, yet it is a commuter-organized system with its own set of rules, proper etiquette, and specific pick-up and drop-off locations, all with no government involvement. Slugging has been in the Washington, D.C., metro area for approximately 35 years. For information on Old Keene Mill Park and Ride, visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector/parkandrides/oldkeenemill.htm. For further information about the ceremony or reasonable ADA accommodations, call the Department of Transportation, 703-877-5600, TTY 711, or e-mail ellen.kamilakis@fairfaxcounty.gov. |
